Our recent life drawing session at @yspsculpture, inspired by Felicity Aylieff’s Expressions in Blue, left me feeling inspired.
We worked directly in the gallery space, navigating sight lines through the monumental porcelain sculptures and using embodied drawing to reflect the physicality and rhythm of Aylieff’s making process. Our brilliant model, Orla responded so thoughtfully to the works — bringing expressive, considered poses that made the whole experience feel incredibly special.
I’m increasingly aware of how collaborative these sessions are — not just between tutor and participants, but between model, materials, sculpture, and place. There’s real power in designing life drawing experiences that respond directly to an artist’s work and its environment. It’s changing how I teach and how I draw: thinking more deeply about scale, form, surface and rhythm.
Huge thanks to YSP for the invitation and for hosting us in such a beautiful, resonant space. And to everyone who came along and brought such openness, focus, and energy — it really was a joy.
More sessions like this coming soon!
